Electricity Demand in US Steadying

For the first time ever in the history of United States, the total average consumption of electricity has remained the same instead of increasing. The electric consumption has levelled out and has increased just a meagre 0.2% in the last decade. This effect can be attributed to different causes like, increasinginly energy efficient equipment, efficient street lights and better energy management techniques.

This kind of a scenario is quite beneficial for everybody involved as energy efficiency causes the power rates to drop. As energy is saved, the surplus energy goes to the reserve storage. As Electricity can only be stored in a limited amount, excess of it causes the rates to drop. Electricity in the country is mainly generated in natural gas fired powerplants. Therefore using low quantities of electricity also result in natural gas resources savings.

Smarter grids and better transfer and transmission techniques have reduced the wastage of power supplies to a minimum. Also the public utilities comission keeps a watch on the service providers and  insures that none of them overcharge their subscribers. These methods have helped keep the power rates in check.

Prepaid electricity service was first introduced in Texas in 2011. Since then, consumers have had more choices when it comes to selecting their electricity service provider, as well as in choosing their rates and plans. In the Dallas area, for example, there are more than 350 plans being offered by Retail Electric Providers (REPs), with 27 of them prepaid plans.
